The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated leader possessing strong critical thinking skills that can effectively serve a large and demanding coastal community. A proven top performer, the successful candidate will be able to manage multiple projects that meet the diverse needs of the community and city departments. The new Assistant to the City Manager will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and have experience preparing and managing critical municipal service agreements. A competitive candidate will be an accessible public servant with the proven ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including the City Manager, Mayor and City Council, Department Heads, City Boards and Commissions, as well as consultants, event producers, contractors, outside agencies, and other public officials. The new Assistant to the City Manager will have a track record of professional accomplishment.

Minimum Qualifications Include:
  • B.A. or B.S in public administration, business administration, or a closely related field.
  • Six or more years of increasingly responsible management experience in government or a comparable business or non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of local government management and public affairs. Skills and experience with people, communication and contemporary communication methods, public relations, technology programs and implementation, finance, budgets, contract administration, goal setting, economic development, grants, and legislative affairs.
  • The position's expected competencies include: Sound decision-making skills; critical thinking ability; problem solving and innovation skills; drive for results; analytic skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal, customer service and diplomatic skills; ethical conduct; and proven top performance.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

CLASSIFICATION :

The position is exempt from coverage under the Fair Labor Standards Act and employee is member of the Unclassified Service.

SELECTION PROCESS :

The selection process may include but is not limited to: application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview. All employment offers made by the City are contingent upon establishing proof of a prospective candidate's legal authorization to work in the United States and successfully passing all components of the pre-employment process, such as: Reference check, background investigation, fingerprint criminal history check, post-offer drug test, post-offer psychological and post-offer medical examination, the cost of which will be borne by the City.
